Born in Bogota, Colombia in 1984 Juan Leyva’s latest series of photographs titled ‘All the Glitters’ are an elegant minimalist statement about the currency of fast food and capitalist appetites in Latin America.
For the body of work Leyva transformed common local fast food items into sculptures of gold and platinum, imposing the value of the fast food industry onto the food item itself. To construct each ‘fast food’ sculpture, Leyva utilized various modeling techniques including casting, molding, air-brushing and gold-leafing to recreate each item in superbly realistic detail. Leyva then carefully staged each sculpture in the studio, photographing it in a manner typically associated commercial product photography. By doing so Leyva is essentially selling the metaphor to the observer, seducing the beholder and encouraging them to reconsider the value of the object.
